Milan or Venice? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Venice if you have never been: there is nothing else like a city of canals with no cars, and two or three days are enough. Pick Milan for a living, working city with design, fashion, aperitivo and the Last Supper, or as a base for the lakes. Venice is slightly cheaper by our mid-range numbers (about €220 a day against €240), but both are expensive and both are crowded.

Milan: suits couples, design lovers and digital nomads who want shopping, aperitivo and day trips to the lakes.

Venice: suits couples, honeymooners and photographers who want canals, churches and early-morning walks before the day-trippers arrive.

Start in Milan, then finish in Venice. Staying overnight in Venice matters: early mornings and evenings, after the day-trippers leave, are when the city is at its best.

Getting between them: Fast train, about 2 h 15 to 2 h 30 from Milano Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia, which opens directly onto the Grand Canal. Common questions

Is Milan or Venice cheaper?

Venice is slightly cheaper by our mid-range estimate: about €220 per person per day against €240 in Milan. In practice both are expensive. Milan's hotels jump during fashion week and trade fairs, while Venice's restaurants near San Marco charge a lot for average food. Eat cicchetti in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro bars to keep costs down.

Can I visit Venice as a day trip from Milan?

Yes, it is about 2 h 15 to 2 h 30 each way by fast train, but you will see Venice at its most crowded. On certain peak days, day visitors also need to pay an access fee, so check the official rules for your date. If you can, stay at least one night to see the city early in the morning and after dark.

When is the best time to visit Venice?

Our data favours June to October, with July highs around 29°C. Summer is also the most crowded period, so late spring and September–October are a good balance. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, but cold and occasionally affected by high water. Carnival in February is spectacular but crowded and expensive.

Which is better for a romantic trip?

Venice. Canal views, quiet squares after dark and boat rides make it one of Europe's classic romantic cities, especially if you stay overnight and walk early in the morning. Milan is better for couples who enjoy shopping, fine dining and aperitivo. Many couples combine them, with two nights in Milan and three in Venice.
