Milan or Naples? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Naples for pizza in its home city, Pompeii and Vesuvius on the doorstep, and a chaotic, deeply local street life — at a much lower cost. Pick Milan for fashion, design, the Last Supper, aperitivo culture and an orderly, efficient city that works as a base for Lake Como. Naples is clearly cheaper by our numbers: about €175 a day mid-range against €240 in Milan.
Milan: suits couples, design lovers and digital nomads who want shopping, aperitivo, art and easy day trips to the lakes.
Naples: suits solo travellers, friends and backpackers who want street food, ancient sites and a city with strong character.

Common questions
Is Milan or Naples cheaper?
Naples, by a wide margin. Our mid-range estimate is about €175 per person per day in Naples against €240 in Milan. Hotels in Milan are among the most expensive in Italy, especially during fashion and design weeks. In Naples a classic pizza costs a fraction of a Milan dinner, and street food makes eating cheaply easy.
Is Naples safe for tourists?
Naples is generally fine for visitors who take normal city precautions. Petty theft is the main risk, so keep phones and bags secure, particularly around the station, on crowded transport and in busy old-town streets. Traffic and scooters can be the bigger surprise, so take care crossing roads. Most visitors have no problems and find the city welcoming.
How long is the train from Milan to Naples?
About 4 h 30 to 4 h 45 on the fastest high-speed trains from Milano Centrale to Napoli Centrale, with stops in cities such as Bologna, Florence and Rome. Booking ahead brings fares down considerably. You can also break the journey in Florence or Rome for a night.
Which is better as a base for day trips?
Both are excellent, for different trips. From Milan you reach Lake Como, Bergamo and Verona easily by train. From Naples you reach Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. If ancient history and coastline appeal, Naples wins; for lakes and northern cities, choose Milan.
