Kuala Lumpur or Singapore? An honest comparison

The short answer

Pick Kuala Lumpur if you want lower costs, street food that rivals Singapore's and a rougher, more varied city with Batu Caves and the Petronas Towers; our mid-range figure is about RM335 a day, far below Singapore's €181. Pick Singapore for the easiest, cleanest city in the region, especially with children, and accept paying more.

Kuala Lumpur: suits budget-minded first-timers, solo travellers and friends who want great cheap food, temples and towers without Singapore prices.

Singapore: suits families and first-timers to Asia who want spotless, effortless logistics, hawker food and attractions like Gardens by the Bay and Sentosa.

Common questions

Is Kuala Lumpur or Singapore cheaper?

Kuala Lumpur, by a wide margin. Our mid-range figure is about RM335 per person per day in KL, which works out well under half of Singapore's roughly €181, or S$262. Hotels show the biggest gap. Hawker food is good value in both, but alcohol, taxis and attractions cost much more in Singapore, where drinks are heavily taxed.

How do I travel from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore?

Flying takes about 1 hour plus airport time, with many daily flights. Coaches run frequently and take roughly 5–6 hours, though the Johor–Woodlands border crossing can add delays at weekends and holidays. By rail you take a train to Johor Bahru and a short cross-border shuttle; check current timetables, as services and connections change.

When is the best time to visit?

Both are hot all year, around 29–32°C, with high humidity, so there is no cool season. Timing is about rain: heavy afternoon downpours are common, and the northeast monsoon brings more rain to Singapore from roughly November to January. Malls, indoor attractions and covered walkways make both cities workable in any month.

Which is better for families?

Singapore. It is extremely safe, clean and easy with a stroller, and has the zoo, Night Safari, Sentosa and Gardens by the Bay. Kuala Lumpur works with children too, with the aquarium, KLCC Park and Batu Caves, but traffic, heat and uneven pavements make walking harder, so you will rely more on Grab and taxis.
