Krakow or Prague? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Krakow for lower prices, a lively student feel and moving 20th-century history in Kazimierz and the Schindler Factory. Pick Prague for the grander skyline, castle and bridges, with bigger crowds and higher costs (about 4,120 CZK, roughly €165, a day mid-range against about 635 PLN, roughly €148, in Krakow).
Krakow: suits couples, friends and solo travellers who want history, good food and nightlife on a lower budget.
Prague: suits couples, first-timers and photographers who want one of Europe's best-preserved historic centres.

Common questions
Is Krakow or Prague cheaper?
Krakow. Our mid-range estimate is about 635 PLN per person per day, roughly €148, against about 4,120 CZK, roughly €165, in Prague. Meals, drinks and hotels are a little cheaper in Krakow, and milk bars and Plac Nowy street food are very cheap. Exchange rates move, so treat the euro figures as rough.
When is the best time to visit?
June is our pick for Krakow and September for Prague. Both reach about 25 to 26°C in July and fall to about 3 to 4°C in January. Late spring and early autumn are good for a combined trip: mild for walking, and quieter than July and August in Prague.
Can I visit Auschwitz from Krakow?
Yes. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is about 1 h 30 by road from Krakow, and many visitors go by bus, train or organised tour. Entry is free but must be booked in advance, and guided visits are common in high season. Plan a full day and book well ahead in summer.
