Granada or Valencia? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Valencia for an easy, flat city with beaches, paella, modern architecture and a long season, especially if you travel with children. Pick Granada for the Alhambra, Moorish lanes and free tapas in a smaller, hillier city. Daily costs are almost identical on our numbers, with Granada marginally cheaper, so choose by what you want to do.
Granada: suits couples, solo travellers and friends who want the Alhambra, mountain views and long tapas evenings.
Valencia: suits families, friends and first-timers who want a city beach, paella, parks and easy cycling.

Common questions
Is Granada or Valencia cheaper?
They are almost the same on our numbers: about €161 per person per day at mid-range for Granada and about €163 for Valencia. Granada's free tapas make eating out cheaper in practice, while Valencia's beach areas and the Las Fallas festival in March push hotel prices up. Outside festival dates, the difference is too small to decide on.
How do I get from Granada to Valencia?
There is no fast direct connection. By train, most journeys go via Madrid with a change, taking roughly five to six hours in total. Long-distance buses run direct but take around eight hours, and driving is about five hours. Check current timetables, and consider breaking the trip with a night in Madrid if you have time.
Which is better for families?
Valencia, clearly. It is flat, bike-friendly and has the long Turia gardens, a large aquarium, the science museum and city beaches reachable by tram. Granada's steep cobbled lanes and stairs are harder with small children, though the Alhambra itself is a memorable visit. For a family holiday, base yourself in Valencia.
When is the best time to visit Granada and Valencia?
April, May, September and October suit both. Granada gets very hot in July and August, while Valencia stays a little cooler thanks to the sea and is good for beaches through summer. Valencia is also pleasant in November and December, and Las Fallas in mid-March is spectacular but very crowded and noisy.
