Common questions
Is Chicago or Miami cheaper?
Chicago is cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €275 per person per day against roughly €304 in Miami. Miami Beach hotels, resort fees and drinks are expensive, especially in winter, which is its high season. Chicago's hotel taxes are high, but you rarely need a car there, which saves money.
When is the best time to visit each?
Chicago is best from late May to early October, when the lakefront and outdoor festivals are at their best; January averages about 1°C and is bitterly cold. Miami is best from roughly December to April, when it's warm and drier. From June to November it's hot, humid and hurricane season.
How do I get from Chicago to Miami?
Fly. Direct flights take about 3 hours and leave Chicago's two airports many times a day. Driving is roughly 2,000 km and two long days, and there's no practical direct train. Combine the two only if you have at least a week.
Which is better for families?
Chicago. Its lakefront museums, Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, which is free, and beaches along Lake Michigan are easy with children, and public transport works. Miami's beaches are great for kids, but it's spread out and much of its focus is nightlife and parties.
