Common questions
Is Buenos Aires or Rio cheaper?
Buenos Aires, on our mid-range numbers: about €141 per person per day against roughly €166 in Rio. Argentina's prices have moved fast in recent years, so check current costs before you go. Both are cheaper than Western Europe for food and drink; Rio's beach days cost little, while Buenos Aires gives good value on steak dinners and wine.
Is Rio de Janeiro safe for tourists?
Most visits are trouble-free, but Rio needs more care than Buenos Aires. Petty theft on beaches and in crowded areas is the main risk. Leave valuables and passports at the hotel, carry a cheap phone in public, use ride apps at night and avoid empty streets and trails after dark. Visit favelas only with a reputable local guide.
When should I visit?
Our data lists February to April and September to December for Buenos Aires, and May, July and September for Rio. Buenos Aires reaches about 29°C in January, with cool winters around 14°C. Rio stays warm, 24–30°C, and is wetter in summer. September suits both; Carnival in February or March is spectacular but crowded and expensive.
Can I do both in one week?
Yes: about four days in Buenos Aires and three in Rio, linked by a direct flight of about three hours. It will feel tight, because Buenos Aires needs time for its neighbourhoods and late nights, and Rio's viewpoints depend on clear weather. Keep a flexible day for Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf. Ten days is more relaxed.
