Common questions
Is Budapest or Krakow cheaper?
Krakow. Our mid-range estimate is about 635 PLN per person per day there against about €172 in Budapest, and the Polish figure is lower at current exchange rates. Meals, beer and hotels all tend to cost less in Krakow, especially outside the Main Square. Budapest's bath tickets and central hotels push its daily cost up.
How do I get from Budapest to Krakow?
There is no fast direct rail link. The usual choices are a direct overnight train with sleeper cars, taking roughly 10 hours, daytime trains with one or more changes, or a long-distance bus of around 7 hours. Flights are short when available but not always offered. Check current timetables and book the sleeper early in summer.
How many days do I need in Krakow?
Three to four days. Two days cover the Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz, and you need a full day for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, which is about 70 km away. Add half a day for the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Book Auschwitz entry with a guide in advance, as slots fill up in summer.
When is the best time to visit?
Our data puts June as Krakow's best month and June, July and October for Budapest, so June suits both. July is warmest, around 25°C in Krakow and 29°C in Budapest. Winters are cold, about 3 to 5°C, but both have Christmas markets in December.
