Common questions

Is Barcelona or Malaga cheaper?

Malaga is cheaper on mid-range numbers: about €172 per person per day against €196 in Barcelona. Rooms and seaside meals cost less, and many sights, such as the Alcazaba, are inexpensive. Malaga has grown more popular and pricier in recent years, but it still gives better value than Barcelona.

Which is better in winter?

Malaga. It is one of the mildest cities in mainland Europe, with January daytime highs around 17°C and plenty of sunshine, so walks, terraces and even beach strolls stay pleasant. Barcelona is cooler at about 13°C in January. It's fine for sightseeing, but you won't be by the sea much.

How do I get from Barcelona to Malaga?

Flying is fastest at about 1 h 45, with several flights a day. Direct high-speed trains also run and take roughly 5 h 30 to 6 hours, centre to centre, which some travellers prefer to airport queues. Book ahead for lower fares and check current timetables.

Which has better beaches?

Barcelona's city beaches are handy but crowded and built for the city. Malaga's beaches are calmer and more local, especially at Pedregalejo and El Palo, with fish grilled on skewers on the sand. For bigger beach days, the Costa del Sol east and west of Malaga has many more options.
