Common questions
Is Barcelona or Lisbon cheaper?
Lisbon. Our mid-range estimate is about €162 per person per day in Lisbon against about €196 in Barcelona. Hotels and restaurant meals are the main difference, and Lisbon's set lunch menus are good value. Both cities add a tourist tax to hotel bills, and prices rise sharply in July and August.
Which has better beaches?
Barcelona has city beaches such as Barceloneta within walking distance or a short metro ride of the centre. Lisbon has no beach in the centre, but the train to Cascais or Estoril takes about 40 minutes, and Costa da Caparica is across the river. The Atlantic in Lisbon is cooler than Barcelona's Mediterranean.
Which is easier to get around?
Barcelona. Its metro is extensive and the Eixample district is flat with a grid layout. Lisbon is very hilly with cobbled streets, so walking is tiring, although trams, funiculars and the metro help. Wear good shoes in Lisbon and allow extra time between viewpoints.
How do I travel between Barcelona and Lisbon?
Fly. Flights take about 2 hours and are frequent. There is no practical direct train between the two cities; overland travel means long buses or several trains via Madrid. Combine with Madrid if you want to travel by land, and check current timetables.
