Is Bali or Lombok cheaper?
Lombok. Our mid-range estimate is about 1,250,000 rupiah per person per day there against about 1,750,000 rupiah, around €87, in Bali. Rooms and meals cost less in Lombok, especially away from the Gilis. Bali offers better value in one sense: far more choice, so you can find good mid-range options in every area.
How do I get from Bali to Lombok?
Fly from Denpasar to Lombok in about 40 minutes, or take a fast boat from Padang Bai or Sanur, about 1 h 30 to 2 h 30 to the Gili Islands or Lombok, depending on the route and sea. The public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar takes about 4 to 5 hours. Boats can be cancelled in rough seas; check current timetables.
Is Lombok quieter than Bali?
Yes, in most places. Mainland Lombok has less development, lighter traffic and many beaches with few people. Gili Trawangan is the exception, with a busy party scene, while Gili Air and Gili Meno are calmer. Lombok is mostly Muslim, so dress modestly in villages and expect fewer bars outside tourist areas.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season, roughly April to October, is best for both, and it is the time to trek Rinjani, which usually closes during the wet months. The wet season runs roughly November to March, with heavy afternoon rain. Temperatures stay around 27 to 32°C all year in both, according to our data.
