Amsterdam or Prague? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Amsterdam for world-class museums, canals you explore by bike or boat, and an easy, flat, international city, if you can accept it is the pricier of the two at about €219 a day mid-range. Pick Prague for a castle-topped old town, hearty Czech food and beer, and lower costs, about CZK 4,120 a day (roughly €165). Prague is the better pick in September; Amsterdam peaks in June.
Amsterdam: suits couples, solo travellers and friends who want the Rijksmuseum, canal walks, cycling and a lively bar scene, and have the budget for it.
Prague: suits couples, first-timers, photographers and older travellers who want a compact historic centre, castle views and good-value food and beer.

Common questions
Is Amsterdam or Prague cheaper?
Prague is clearly cheaper on our numbers. Mid-range travel costs about CZK 4,120 per person per day in Prague, roughly €165, against about €219 in Amsterdam. Accommodation shows the biggest gap, as central Amsterdam hotels are among the priciest in Europe. Beer and set lunches in Prague are still good value, though prices around Old Town Square are much higher than in Vinohrady or Karlín.
How do I get from Amsterdam to Prague?
Flying is fastest: about 1 h 30 in the air on direct flights, plus airport time. By rail you go via Berlin, roughly 6 h 20 from Amsterdam to Berlin and about 4 h 15 on to Prague, so allow 10–11 h with the change. Night trains have operated on this corridor on some days of the week; check current timetables before planning around one.
How many days do I need in each?
Three days covers Amsterdam's canals, the main museums and a neighbourhood or two; add a fourth for a day trip, or Keukenhof in spring. Prague needs three days for the Old Town, castle district and Vyšehrad, plus one for Kutná Hora or Český Krumlov, which is a long day. On a week, three in Amsterdam and four in Prague is a balanced split.
When is the best time to visit Amsterdam and Prague?
Amsterdam is best in June, with highs around 22°C, and spring brings the tulips at Keukenhof. Prague is best in September: still warm after a July peak of about 26°C but less crowded than summer. Both are cold and grey in January, around 4–7°C. For one trip covering both, June or September works well.
