Agra or Varanasi? An honest comparison
The short answer
Pick Agra for the Taj Mahal and Mughal monuments, seen comfortably in one or two days. Pick Varanasi for an intense, deeply spiritual city of ghats, river rituals and old lanes, which stays with you longer than any single monument. Varanasi is cheaper on our numbers, about ₹5,100 a day mid-range against ₹7,000 in Agra, but it is also the more demanding place for first-timers.
Agra: suits couples, families, first-timers and backpackers who want the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort in a short, easy stay.
Varanasi: suits solo travellers, backpackers and curious first-timers ready for crowds, cremation ghats and dawn boat rides.

Common questions
Is Agra or Varanasi cheaper?
Varanasi is cheaper on our numbers: about ₹5,100 per person per day at mid-range, against ₹7,000 in Agra. Guesthouses along the ghats and street food are inexpensive. In Agra, foreigners' entry fees for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort take a big share of the budget. Boat rides in Varanasi are cheap but agree the price first.
How do I get from Agra to Varanasi?
Most travellers take an overnight train, which takes roughly 10–13 h depending on the service and saves a hotel night; book an air-conditioned sleeper class early. Direct flights from Agra are limited, so many people fly via Delhi, about 1 h 20 from Delhi to Varanasi. Check current timetables, as trains are often delayed in winter fog.
Is Varanasi suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Yes, if you are prepared. Varanasi is crowded, noisy and confronting: cremations take place openly at Manikarnika Ghat, and photography there is not appropriate. Stay near the ghats, walk with a map, and use a guide for the old lanes on day one. Agra is easier for a very first stop, so many travellers do Agra before Varanasi.
When is the best time to visit Agra and Varanasi?
November to February is best for both, with January highs around 19–21°C. Fog can delay trains and blur views in December and January. It gets very hot in spring and early summer: Varanasi reaches about 39°C in April and Agra about 39°C in June. During the monsoon the Ganges rises and some ghats flood.
