Is Whistler safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Whistler is a safe resort town, and crime against visitors is low. The real risks are mountain-related: avalanches off-piste, ski and bike injuries, wildlife and winter driving on the Sea to Sky Highway. Most visitors have no problems if they respect conditions.

The real risks

Avalanches

Never ski or hike out of bounds without avalanche training and gear. Check Avalanche Canada forecasts.

Ski and bike injuries

Wear a helmet, ski or ride within your ability, and have insurance that covers winter sports and mountain biking.

Bears

Black bears are common in spring and summer. Keep your distance, never feed them and use bear-proof bins.

Winter driving

The Sea to Sky Highway is winding and can be icy. Winter tyres or chains are required from 1 October to 31 March.

Theft of gear

Skis and bikes are stolen from racks. Lock them or use ski checks.

Areas and times to take care

The Village, Upper Village and Creekside are fine to walk at night. Après bars get busy and loud in the evenings, especially on winter weekends, but trouble is rare.

Getting around safely

The free village shuttle and Whistler Transit buses are safe and reliable. Taxis are available in the village. Shuttles from Vancouver run several times a day. If you drive, check DriveBC for road conditions.

Solo and women travellers

Whistler is comfortable for solo women, with many solo skiers and hikers. Usual precautions apply in bars at night. On remote trails, tell someone your route and carry bear spray in summer.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Dress in layers for mountain weather, use sunscreen at altitude and stay hydrated. There is a health care centre in Whistler; serious cases are transferred to Vancouver or Squamish. Have insurance that covers winter sports.

Emergency: 911 for police, ambulance and fire.
