Is Vancouver safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Vancouver is generally safe for visitors, with low violent crime. The most visible issue is the Downtown Eastside, around East Hastings Street, where homelessness and drug use are concentrated. Car break-ins and bike theft are the most common crimes affecting visitors.

The real risks

Downtown Eastside

The blocks around East Hastings near Gastown and Chinatown have visible drug use; avoid walking through them at night.

Car break-ins

Leave nothing visible in cars, especially at trailheads and viewpoints.

Bike theft

Lock bikes securely or use bike-share.

Mountain trails

North Shore trails are steep and weather changes fast; carry water and layers and do not hike after dark.

Cold water

The sea is cold even in summer; swim at lifeguarded beaches.

Areas and times to take care

Downtown, the West End, Yaletown, Kitsilano, Granville Island and Stanley Park are generally safe. Gastown is lively and fine to visit, but keep to the main streets at night and avoid the blocks around East Hastings and Main Street.

Getting around safely

SkyTrain, buses and the SeaBus are safe and efficient. Taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft) operate. For the Sea-to-Sky Highway, drive carefully: the road is scenic but winding and busy.

Solo and women travellers

Vancouver is comfortable for women travelling alone. Usual precautions apply at night, especially near the Downtown Eastside. On North Shore trails, hike with others or tell someone your plans.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Rain from November to March is the main weather issue. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in some summers. Healthcare is excellent but expensive for visitors without insurance.

Emergency: 911 (police, fire, ambulance)
