Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost, especially from June to September. The North Shore attractions (Capilano, Grouse Mountain) and the Sea to Sky Gondola are expensive, at C$70-80+ each. Eating out is pricey but there is excellent value in Asian restaurants. Hotels add GST, provincial tax and a municipal accommodation tax, and restaurant prices exclude tax, with tips of about 15-18% expected.
When it is cheaper
November to March (outside ski holidays and Christmas) is the cheapest time for hotels, often 30-40% below summer (check current rates), though it is rainy.
How to spend less
- Visit the free Lynn Canyon suspension bridge instead of Capilano.
- Climb the Grouse Grind and pay only the one-way ride down.
- Ride the Stanley Park Seawall on a Mobi bike-share bike for short hops.
- Eat in the West End, Chinatown and Richmond's Asian restaurants.
- Use the Canada Line from the airport instead of a taxi.
- Take the SeaBus at dusk for a cheap skyline view from the water.
