Is Valencia safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Valencia is a safe city for visitors, with low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in the old town, at the Mercado Central and on the beach, and the crowds and fireworks of Las Fallas.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
In Ciutat Vella, the Mercado Central, the metro and during Las Fallas. Keep bags closed and in front.
Beach theft
Don't leave belongings unattended at Malvarrosa and Las Arenas.
Fallas crowds and firecrackers
During the mascletàs and street fireworks, crowds are dense and firecrackers are everywhere; protect your ears and keep children close.
Bikes in the Turia
Cyclists and runners share paths; keep to the right lanes.
Heat
July and August highs of about 31°C with humidity; drink water and rest at midday.
Autumn storms
Heavy rain episodes (DANA) can cause flooding in autumn; follow official alerts.
Areas and times to take care
Ciutat Vella, Ruzafa, the Eixample, the Turia gardens and the beach are safe day and night. Barrio del Carmen and Ruzafa are lively until late at weekends; watch your belongings in crowded bars. Quiet streets late at night should be walked with normal city awareness.
Getting around safely
Metro, tram and buses are safe; watch for pickpockets in crowds. Licensed white taxis are metered and reliable; Uber and Cabify also operate. Cycling is easy on the many bike lanes.
Solo and women travellers
Valencia is relaxed and comfortable for women travelling alone, with busy streets and terraces late into the evening. Usual precautions apply in nightlife areas and during Las Fallas crowds: keep an eye on drinks and use taxis late.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink, though many locals prefer bottled or filtered water for taste. Sun and heat are the main health issues in summer. EU visitors should carry the EHIC.
