Is Thassos safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Thassos is a very safe, family-friendly island with little crime. The realistic risks are natural: rough sea at the Giola rock pool, sharp marble rocks at Aliki and Marble Beach, sun and heat, and busy roads in high season.
The real risks
Giola rock pool
Dangerous in wind and waves; swim or jump only in calm seas and check depth first.
Sharp marble rocks
At Aliki and Marble Beach, wear water shoes.
Glare and heat
Marble Beach is very bright and Aliki has little shade; bring sunglasses, hats and water.
Roads
The coast road is good but busy in July and August; mountain roads are narrower. Marble Beach's last stretch is a dirt track used by marble trucks.
Ferry queues
Arrive 30–60 minutes early with a car in July and August.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care on cliff paths at the Archangel Michael monastery viewpoints and on unlit village roads at night.
Getting around safely
KTEL buses circle the island several times a day from Limenas. Taxis are available in the main resorts. If driving, take care on mountain roads and do not drink and drive.
Solo and women travellers
Thassos is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply in resort bars at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water quality varies by village; many visitors drink bottled. Summer sun is strong, with highs of about 32°C in July and August. There is a health centre on the island; the hospital in Kavala is about an hour away including the ferry.
