How many days in Thassos? 5 days around the island, one coast at a time
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Thassos is the green island of the north Aegean, covered in pine and olive, ringed by a single coast road of about 95-100 km. It is the closest island to Thessaloniki and the Balkans, with ferries every hour in summer, so it feels more like a mountain region that happens to be surrounded by sea. Give it five days and take the coast in sections: the north and east first, then the south, then the west and the old mountain villages. The water is clear, the beaches are many, and distances are short.
Short answer
Three days covers Limenas, Golden Beach, Aliki and Giola. Five days adds the mountain villages of Theologos and Kazaviti, Marble Beach and the Archangel Michael monastery, at a pace that leaves afternoons for swimming.
The 5-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Limenas and the ancient city
Morning. Start in Limenas (Thassos town), the port where most ferries from Keramoti arrive. Walk through the ancient agora beside the old harbour (free or a few euros), then visit the Archaeological Museum, with a 3.5-metre kouros carrying a ram, finds from the island's gold-rich ancient city, and marble work (about €4-6).
Afternoon. Walk up the marked path through the pines to the ancient theatre and on to the acropolis, with the remains of the temples of Apollo and Athena, about 1-1.5 hours return. At the top, look for the carved stone Gate of Parmenon and the view across to Kavala and Mount Athos.
Evening. Swim at the town beach or at Makryammos, 2 km away, then eat at the old harbour, where fishing boats tie up next to the tavernas. A grilled fish meal with wine costs €18-30 per person.
Ancient walls with gates carved with gods still ring the town; a free leaflet from the museum maps a 1-2 hour walk around them.
Day 2: Panagia, Potamia and Golden Beach
Morning. Drive 9 km to Panagia, a mountain village of slate roofs and running water channels, with a plane-shaded square and the church of the Dormition. Continue 4 km to Potamia, where the Vagis Museum shows the work of Polygnotos Vagis, the sculptor born here who worked in New York.
Afternoon. Drop down to Chrysi Ammoudia (Golden Beach), the long sandy bay below Panagia, with shallow water and sunbeds for about €10-15 a set. Walk to Skala Potamias at its southern end.
Evening. Have dinner in Panagia, known for roast lamb and goat, or on the beach. Hikers can plan a dawn climb from Potamia to Ipsario, the island's highest peak at about 1,200 metres, about 3-4 hours up.
The east coast faces the sunrise. Go to Golden Beach in the afternoon, when the mountain gives shade to the sand.
Day 3: The southeast: Paradise, Aliki and the Archangel monastery
Morning. Drive south past Kinira and its islet to Paradise Beach (Makryammos tou Kinira), a sandy cove under pines. Continue 10 km to Aliki, a narrow peninsula with an ancient marble quarry, where the cut stone faces still show the chisel marks, and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas. Swim off the white marble rocks.
Afternoon. Drive 5 km to the Monastery of the Archangel Michael, perched on a cliff above the sea. It is a working convent, so cover shoulders and knees (wraps are lent at the entrance). Then continue to Astris and Psili Ammos, sandy beaches on the south tip.
Evening. Stay for dinner in Potos or Limenaria on the southwest coast, the liveliest resorts outside Limenas, with tavernas and bars on the water.
Aliki has little shade. Visit the quarry in the morning and bring shoes for the sharp marble rocks.
Day 4: Giola and Theologos
Morning. Walk 15-20 minutes from the road near Astris to Giola, a natural rock pool of seawater surrounded by cliffs, where people jump from the edges. Go before 10:00, when it is quiet, and only in calm seas.
Afternoon. Drive 10 km inland from Potos to Theologos, the island's old capital under the Ottomans, with stone houses roofed in slate and a small folklore museum. Several tavernas roast whole lamb and goat on spits along the main street.
Evening. Watch sunset from Limenaria, once a mining town, where the old German metal company's mansion, the Palataki, stands on the hill. Dinner by the sea, €15-25 per person.
Giola is dangerous in wind and waves. If the sea is rough, swim at Pefkari instead, a sheltered pine-shaded bay between Potos and Limenaria.
Day 5: The west: Marble Beach, Kazaviti and Skala Prinou
Morning. Drive north along the west coast through Skala Marion and Skala Rachoniou, small fishing harbours with sand beaches. Then take the hill road up to Megalo and Mikro Kazaviti above Prinos, villages of old stone houses, plane trees and springs.
Afternoon. Cross the island to Marble Beach (Saliara), 7 km east of Limenas, where the shore is made of crushed white marble from the working quarries above; the water is a bright milky turquoise. The last part of the road is a dirt track used by marble trucks.
Evening. Back in Limenas, buy Thassos honey, throumba olives and spoon sweets such as karydaki (green walnuts in syrup). Dinner on the old harbour.
Marble Beach is very bright: bring sunglasses and avoid the middle of the day on hot days.
Only have 3 days?
With 3 days, do Limenas and Golden Beach on Day 1, Aliki and the monastery on Day 2, and Giola with Theologos on Day 3. You lose the west coast and Marble Beach.
Got extra days?
Extra days fit Kavala on the mainland, 1h15 by ferry from Prinos, for its old town and aqueduct, or ancient Philippi (UNESCO), about 30 minutes inland from Kavala. Hikers can spend a day on the Ipsario trails.

Getting around
Ferries run from Keramoti to Limenas in about 35-40 minutes, almost every hour in summer, and from Kavala to Prinos in about 1h15; check current timetables. Kavala airport is about 15 km from Keramoti. A car is easiest (€30-55 a day in summer); the coast road runs right round the island. KTEL Thassos buses circle the island several times a day from Limenas, with fares of about €2-6. Distances from Limenas: Golden Beach about 15 km, Aliki 30 km, Potos 45 km.
What to eat in Thassos
Thassos is famous for its honey, from the pine forests, and for throumba olives, wrinkled black olives that ripen on the tree. Village tavernas in Theologos and Panagia roast lamb and goat on spits. On the coast, order grilled sardines, mussels and savridi. Spoon sweets are a local craft, especially karydaki (green walnut) and fig. A taverna meal with wine costs €15-25 per person; souvlaki is about €3.50. Local tsipouro is often served with mezedes.
Best time to visit
June and September are best: highs of 26-30°C, warm sea and short ferry queues. July and August are busy with visitors from Greece and the Balkans, and the Keramoti ferries fill on weekends. May is green but the sea is cool (around 19-20°C). Most hotels close from late October to April.

Common questions
Keramoti or Kavala ferry?
Keramoti to Limenas is the shortest crossing, about 35-40 minutes, with the most departures, and Keramoti is near Kavala airport. Kavala to Prinos takes about 1h15 and suits people coming from the city or Thessaloniki. In July and August, arrive 30-60 minutes early with a car. Check current timetables.
Do I need a car in Thassos?
It helps a lot. The KTEL buses go round the island, but not often, and they do not reach the mountain villages, Giola or Marble Beach easily. A small car or scooter lets you see one coast a day. The coast road is good; mountain roads are narrower.
Which are the best beaches in Thassos?
Golden Beach for sand and families, Paradise Beach for pines and a cove, Marble Beach for its white shore and colour, Aliki for snorkelling among ancient ruins, and Psili Ammos and Pefkari for calm water in the south. Giola is a rock pool, not a beach, and only safe in calm seas.
Is Thassos good for families?
Yes. The sea is calm and shallow at Golden Beach, Pefkari and Skala Potamias, distances are short, food prices are moderate, and the ferry crossing is under an hour. Many families come by car from Thessaloniki, about 2h30 to Keramoti.
