Is Sweden safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Sweden is a safe country for visitors, with low risk of violent crime against tourists. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in busy areas and on public transport, bike theft and, in winter, ice and darkness. Gang-related violence has made headlines, but it is concentrated in certain suburbs and rarely affects visitors.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
In Stockholm's Gamla Stan, Central Station, on the metro and at summer events; keep phones and wallets secure.
Ice and slippery streets
From November to March pavements can be very icy; wear shoes with grip.
Cold water
Lakes and the Baltic are cold even in summer; swim at official spots and enter slowly.
Driving in winter and wildlife
Snow, darkness and elk or reindeer on rural roads, especially in the north; winter tyres are compulsory in season.
Card-only payments
Many places refuse cash; carry a working card and phone payment as backup.
Areas and times to take care
There are no visitor areas to avoid. Take ordinary care around Stockholm Central Station, Sergels torg and Malmö's central station late at night. Gang violence is concentrated in some outer suburbs, which visitors rarely have reason to visit.
Getting around safely
Public transport is safe at all hours, with night buses in Stockholm. Taxis are licensed but prices vary widely; check the fare sticker on the window or use Uber and Bolt. SJ trains are safe and comfortable.
Solo and women travellers
Sweden is among the most comfortable countries for women travelling alone. Normal nightlife precautions apply. In the countryside or Lapland, tell someone your hiking plans.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is excellent. In summer, mosquitoes are common in the north and ticks in the south and archipelagos (tick-borne encephalitis exists in some coastal areas); use repellent and check for ticks. Healthcare is very good; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC, others travel insurance.
