Is Sweden expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Short answer

Sweden is expensive, in line with Finland and Denmark and a little cheaper than Norway, with high prices for hotels, restaurant dinners and alcohol. Averaged over a trip, a budget traveller needs about SEK 1,050 a day, mid-range about SEK 2,030 and comfort about SEK 3,850 per person, excluding intercity trains (about SEK 300–900 per journey). Lunch deals and public transport passes help a lot.

Where the money goes

Accommodation is the largest cost, with central Stockholm doubles at SEK 1,400–2,200 and hostels from SEK 700–1,200. Dinner in a restaurant easily reaches SEK 300–450 per person with a drink, and strong alcohol is sold only at the state-run Systembolaget shops. Museums such as the Vasa (about SEK 230) and Skansen (SEK 200–300) are moderately priced. Intercity trains are good value only if booked well ahead.

When it is cheaper

City hotels are often cheaper in July, when business travel stops, and at weekends. Late autumn and winter outside Christmas are usually the cheapest overall, except in Lapland, where winter is high season.
