Is Spetses safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Spetses is very safe, with low crime and a relaxed small-island atmosphere. The realistic risks are scooter accidents on the coastal road, sun and heat in July and August, and the occasional overcharge. Crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Scooter and e-bike accidents

The coastal road is narrow and winding with gravel on bends. Wear a helmet, ride slowly and do not ride after drinking.

Heat and sun

July and August highs are around 33–34°C. Swim and ride in the morning or late afternoon, use sun protection and carry water.

Sea and boats

Swim where other people swim and stay clear of water-taxi and boat routes near beaches and harbours.

Overcharging

Fish is often priced by the kilo; ask for the weight and price before it is cooked. Check water-taxi fares on the board at Dapia before you board.

Petty theft

Rare, but do not leave phones and bags unattended on beaches or on a parked scooter.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of Spetses that visitors need to avoid. The waterfront between Dapia and the Old Harbour is busy and lit until late in summer. Take care walking on the coastal road after dark, as there are few pavements.

Getting around safely

Water taxis from the Dapia rank run at fixed, posted fares and are the safest way back from beaches or the Old Harbour at night. Summer buses are limited, so check return times. Horse-drawn carriages are traditional; agree the price first. Rent scooters only from shops that provide helmets and insurance.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel comfortable on Spetses: the island is small, the town is lively in the evenings in season and harassment is uncommon. Usual precautions apply: watch your drink in bars, avoid isolated beaches after dark and use a water taxi rather than walking long unlit roads at night.

Health, water and heat

Many visitors drink bottled water on the Greek islands; ask your host about the local tap water. The main health issue in summer is heat and sun. There are pharmacies in Dapia and a health centre on the island; serious cases are transferred to the mainland.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Greece and the EU); 166 for ambulance, 100 for police, 1571 for the tourist police.
