Is Skopelos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Skopelos is a very safe, relaxed island, and crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks are narrow winding roads, scooter accidents, summer sun and the meltemi wind at sea. Most visitors have no problems at all.

The real risks

Roads and scooters

The main road is good but narrow and winding, with sharp bends and some unpaved side roads to beaches. Wear a helmet, drive slowly and avoid riding after drinking.

Sun and heat

July and August highs are about 29°C with strong sun. Use sunscreen and a hat, and carry water on walks.

Wind and sea

The meltemi can make the sea choppy in July and August. Swim in south-facing bays on windy days and follow boat operators' advice on cancellations.

Steep lanes

Skopelos Town is built on steep steps that can be slippery. Wear proper shoes, especially at night.

Areas and times to take care

Skopelos Town, the harbour and the villages are safe to walk at any hour. The monasteries on Mount Palouki and the chapel at Agios Ioannis are working religious sites, so dress modestly and behave quietly inside.

Getting around safely

Taxis wait at the harbour; there are not many, so book ahead for early ferries or late dinners. The island bus runs along the main road between town, the beaches and Loutraki several times a day in summer. Ferries and boats depend on the weather; keep a spare day before your departure from Skiathos.

Solo and women travellers

Skopelos is very comfortable for solo women, with a family atmosphere. The main precautions are practical: tell someone your route if you walk between villages or to the monasteries, and avoid scooter riding on unfamiliar roads after dark.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is not always recommended for drinking on Greek islands; many visitors drink bottled water, so ask your hotel. Sun protection is important from May to September. There is a health centre on the island; serious cases may need transfer to the mainland, so carry travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 (EU emergency number); 100 for police, 166 for an ambulance, 108 for the coast guard.
