Is Preveza safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Preveza is a safe, friendly town with low crime. The realistic risks are driving, heat at unshaded ruins such as Nikopolis, and cold, fast water at the Acheron springs after rain.
The real risks
Roads
Distances between sights are long; drive carefully on the coastal and mountain roads and avoid driving after drinking.
Heat at Nikopolis
The site has almost no shade; go early with water and a hat.
The Acheron springs
The water is about 10–15°C and the current can be strong after rain; keep children close and wear water shoes.
Beach currents
Monolithi faces the open Ionian; swim near organised sections on windy days.
Petty theft
Uncommon; keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at beaches.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. The waterfront and old market are busy with families late into the evening in summer.
Getting around safely
Taxis are available in town and at Aktion airport. Buses are safe but infrequent. Driving is the norm; watch for slow vehicles on rural roads.
Solo and women travellers
Preveza is comfortable for women travelling alone; the evening promenade is lively and well lit. Usual precautions apply on empty beaches and in remote gorges.
Health, water and heat
Many visitors drink bottled water; ask your host about the local supply. Sun protection is essential in summer. Preveza has a general hospital, and Ioannina is about 1.5–2 hours away for larger hospital care.
