Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in rooms in the town centre, at about €40–70 a night, within walking distance of the waterfront and the bus station. Monolithi has apartments at slightly higher prices.
Getting around cheaply
Aktion airport is about 10 minutes from town through the undersea tunnel (a toll of a few euros). KTEL buses connect with Athens in about 4.5–5 hours. Buses to the sights are infrequent, so a shared small car (about €35–60 a day in summer) is the cheapest practical way to see the area.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Nikopolis site (about €6–8)
- Lunch: picnic or a bakery pie (about €5)
- Afternoon: swim on a free stretch of Monolithi
- Evening: meze with shrimp and sardines in the old market (about €15–20)
- Total: about €30–35 plus your bed (about €25) and a share of the car, so roughly €60–70
