Is Paxos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Paxos is very safe, with very little crime and a calm, family atmosphere. The realistic risks are at sea and on the roads: small rented boats in afternoon wind and swell, narrow roads on scooters, sun and heat, and slippery rocks at pebble beaches. Crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Small boats

The west coast catches the afternoon wind and swell. Go round the cliffs in the morning, follow the rental company's briefing and never take a small boat into the caves in rough water.

Scooters and narrow roads

The single main road is narrow and winding. Ride carefully, wear a helmet and avoid riding after drinking.

Rocky beaches

Most beaches are pebble or rock. Water shoes help, and take care climbing in and out of the sea.

Sun and heat

July and August are hot and sunny, with little shade on boats. Use sun protection and carry water.

Ferry disruption

Boats depend on the weather. Leave slack before your flight home from Corfu.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid on Paxos. Take normal care with belongings in busy harbours in August, and with footing on cliff paths such as those around Erimitis.

Getting around safely

Taxis are few and busy in the evening, so ask your taverna or hotel to book your return in advance. The bus runs a few times a day along the main road. There is no ride-hailing. Water taxis cross to the Gaios islets, and shuttle boats run to Antipaxos in season.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel at ease on Paxos: villages are small and busy with families in summer, and harassment is uncommon. Usual precautions apply: arrange a taxi rather than walking unlit roads between villages at night, and tell someone your route before walking remote inland paths alone.

Health, water and heat

Many visitors drink bottled water on the small islands; ask your host about the tap water. Sun and heat are the main issues in summer. Paxos has a health centre and pharmacies in the villages; serious cases are transferred to Corfu.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Greece and the EU); 166 for ambulance, 100 for police, 108 for the coastguard.
