Is Netherlands safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
The Netherlands is a safe country for visitors, with low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing and bike theft in Amsterdam, cyclists and trams in busy streets, and canals for anyone who has been drinking. Drug laws are more relaxed than elsewhere but still have limits.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Common in Amsterdam around Centraal Station, Dam Square, the Red Light District and on trams. Keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets.
Bikes and trams
Never walk on red bike lanes and look both ways twice. Trams are quiet and cannot swerve.
Bike theft
If you rent a bike, lock both the frame and the wheel to something fixed.
Canals
Many canals have no railings; take care at night, especially after drinking.
Street drug sellers
People selling drugs on the street sell fakes or dangerous substances. Buying from them is illegal.
Areas and times to take care
City centres are generally safe day and night. In Amsterdam, the Red Light District (De Wallen) is busy and policed but attracts pickpockets and rowdy groups at night; photographing sex workers is prohibited. Large stations attract some petty crime late at night.
Getting around safely
Trains, trams and buses are safe and reliable; NS trains run late, with night trains on some routes. Taxis are expensive; use official taxi ranks or Uber. Cycling is the safest and fastest way around once you know the rules.
Solo and women travellers
The Netherlands is very safe for solo women. Normal precautions apply in nightlife areas and on late trains. The Red Light District can be crowded with drunk groups at weekends; walk elsewhere if it feels uncomfortable.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe and of high quality. Weather is changeable, so bring a rain jacket. Healthcare is excellent; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC, others travel insurance.
