Is Naxos safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Naxos is very safe, with very low crime. The realistic risks are road accidents (especially on scooters and quad bikes), the strong meltemi wind on boats and beaches, sun and heat, and hiking in the mountains in summer.
The real risks
Scooters and quads
Accidents are the most common serious problem for visitors; wear a helmet, avoid gravel roads and do not ride after drinking.
Meltemi wind
Strong north winds in July and August make the sea rough on some beaches and can delay ferries.
Heat on hikes
Mount Zas and inland trails have little shade; start early and carry plenty of water.
Sea urchins and rocks
Wear water shoes on rocky beaches.
Petty theft
Rare; do not leave valuables unattended on beaches.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Chora's waterfront is busy until late in summer, but calm and friendly.
Getting around safely
KTEL buses are safe and cheap; taxis are limited in number, so book ahead at night. Drive carefully on narrow mountain roads.
Solo and women travellers
Naxos is very comfortable for women travelling alone; villages and Chora are friendly and well lit. Usual precautions apply at night in bars.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally drinkable in parts of the island but varies; many people drink bottled water. Sun protection is essential in summer. Chora has a health centre; serious cases go to Athens.
