Is Mykonos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Mykonos is a safe island with low crime. The realistic risks are inflated bills and unpriced extras, drink-related problems in the party scene, petty theft on crowded beaches and road accidents involving ATVs and scooters. Violent crime against visitors is rare.

The real risks

Overcharging

Seafood priced per kilo, unpriced champagne or show bottles, and 'broken' card machines. Order from the printed menu, ask prices first and check the bill.

ATVs and scooters

Narrow, winding roads, summer traffic and inexperienced riders cause frequent accidents. Ride only if experienced, wear a helmet and check your insurance.

Nightlife

In the clubs of Paradise and the bars of Chora, watch your drink and stay with friends; avoid buying drugs, which carry severe penalties in Greece.

Beach theft

Phones and bags left on sunbeds on busy beaches. Keep valuables with you or in the hotel safe.

Meltemi wind and sun

Strong summer winds on the north coast and intense sun. Choose sheltered south beaches on windy days and use sunscreen.

Areas and times to take care

Chora, Little Venice, the south-coast beaches and Ano Mera are safe day and night. The party beaches and Chora's bar lanes are crowded and loud until dawn in July and August, but trouble is mostly drink-related. Save your hotel location on your phone, as Chora's whitewashed lanes look identical at night.

Getting around safely

Buses are cheap and safe; check the last departure. Taxis are very few in summer, so pre-book transfers. Sea taxis link the south beaches with the Old Port. If you rent an ATV or scooter, ride carefully: accidents are common and insurance may not cover you.

Solo and women travellers

Mykonos is generally easy for solo women and has a famously open, LGBTQ+-friendly atmosphere. Take normal nightlife precautions, watch drinks and use booked transfers late at night rather than accepting lifts.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is often desalinated and not always pleasant to drink; most visitors drink bottled water. Sun and heat (highs of 29°C in July and August, with strong UV) and dehydration after nights out are the main concerns. The island has a health centre; serious cases are transferred to Athens, so take travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 171 for the tourist police.
