Is Muscat safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Muscat is one of the safest capitals in the region, with very low crime and a calm, courteous atmosphere. The realistic risks are heat, road safety, flash floods in wadis after rain and slippery hikes such as Wadi Shab.
The real risks
Heat
From May to September daytime highs reach 37–39°C; avoid midday outdoor activity, drink plenty of water and use sun protection.
Flash floods
Never enter or drive through wadis after rain or when rain is forecast in the mountains.
Wadi Shab and hikes
The rocks are slippery; wear water shoes, start early and carry water.
Driving
Roads are good, but speed cameras are everywhere and fines are high; watch for camels and goats on rural roads at night.
Local laws
Dress modestly in public, avoid public displays of affection and do not photograph people without permission.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas of Muscat known as unsafe for visitors. The Mutrah Souq and corniche are busy in the evening and feel safe.
Getting around safely
Use the Otaxi or OmanTaxi apps or hotel taxis; agree the fare first if a taxi has no meter. Mwasalat buses link the airport, Ruwi and Mutrah cheaply. A rental car is the easiest way to the wadis.
Solo and women travellers
Muscat is generally comfortable for women travelling alone. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and cover your hair in mosques. Wear shorts and a T-shirt over swimwear at public beaches and in wadis.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is treated, but many visitors drink bottled water. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are the main health risks; plan outdoor sights for early morning or evening. Medical care in Muscat is of a good standard.
