Muscat on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Muscat can be done on a modest budget if you stay in Ruwi or Mutrah and eat in local cafés, but transport makes it pricier than it looks. Plan on about 31 OMR per person per day (bed 15, food 8, sights 3, transport 5).

Free things to do
- Walk the Mutrah Corniche past the dhows
- Wander the lanes of the Mutrah Souq
- See Al Alam Palace and the Jalali and Mirani forts from outside in Old Muscat
- Swim and picnic at the Bimmah Sinkhole park (Hawiyat Najm)
- Walk the beach and park at Qurum
- Watch the fishing boats and dhows in Mutrah harbour in the early morning
Cheap eats
- Biryani in Ruwi: about 1–2 OMR
- Shawarma from a corner café: a few hundred baisa to about 1 OMR
- Kahwa (cardamom coffee) and dates: often offered free
- Mashuai (spiced kingfish with lemon rice) at a local restaurant
- Omani halwa from the souq, as a sweet or souvenir
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in simple hotels in Ruwi and Mutrah, for about 25–45 OMR a room, close to the souq, the corniche and the main bus station.
Getting around cheaply
Mwasalat buses are the cheapest way between the airport, Ruwi and Mutrah, for a few hundred baisa. For the coast and wadis, a shared rental car (about 15–25 OMR a day) is cheaper than tours.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Grand Mosque visit (check entry fee) and Qurum beach
- Lunch: biryani in Ruwi (about 2 OMR)
- Afternoon: Old Muscat from outside and the National Museum (about 5 OMR)
- Evening: Mutrah Corniche and souq, shawarma dinner (about 2 OMR); taxis about 6 OMR for the day
- Total: about 15 OMR plus your bed (about 15 OMR), so roughly 30 OMR
More ways to save
- Travel in November–March but book early, as prices rise in peak months.
- Go to the souq in the late afternoon or evening; it closes for an afternoon break and on Friday mornings.
- Combine Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab in one self-drive day.
- Carry water and snacks; wadi trips have few shops.
- Use buses for airport transfers if you travel light.
- Drink kahwa when offered; it is hospitality, not a sales pitch.
