Is Montreal safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Montreal is a safe city for visitors, with low violent crime in the tourist areas. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowds, bike theft, icy pavements in winter and some street disorder around a few metro stations.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

In festival crowds, on the metro and in Old Montreal; keep bags closed.

Bike theft

Lock bikes properly, or use BIXI.

Winter ice

Pavements and stairs are icy from December to March; wear shoes with grip.

Street disorder

Some areas around downtown and the Berri-UQAM and Atwater stations show visible homelessness or drug use; stay alert at night.

Traffic

Cyclists and drivers can be fast; look both ways on bike paths.

Areas and times to take care

Old Montreal, the Plateau, Mile End, downtown and Little Italy are fine for visitors. Take normal care late at night around Saint-Laurent nightlife and some downtown metro stations.

Getting around safely

The metro and buses are safe; the 747 airport bus runs 24 hours. Taxis and Uber operate. In winter, allow extra time.

Solo and women travellers

Montreal is comfortable for women travelling alone. Usual precautions apply in bar districts at night; the metro and main streets are busy in the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. Winter cold (about -6°C highs and -14°C lows in January) requires warm layers; summer can be humid around 25°C.

Emergency: 911
