Is Jaipur safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Jaipur is generally safe for visitors, with little violent crime against tourists. The realistic issues are touts, gem scams and shopping commissions, overcharging, heavy traffic and extreme heat from April to June.
The real risks
Gem scams
Offers to 'buy gems to resell at home' are a well-known scam; buy only from reputable shops with certificates.
Commission tours
Rickshaw and taxi drivers offering cheap tours that stop at gem, textile or restaurant partners; agree the itinerary and use app taxis.
Copycat shops
Several shops use the names of famous lassi and sweet shops; check the exact address.
Traffic
Very heavy in the old city; cross carefully.
Heat
April to June regularly exceeds 37–38°C, often above 40°C; visit forts at opening time.
Monkeys
At Galta Ji and some forts, keep food out of sight and do not feed them.
Areas and times to take care
The Pink City bazaars are very crowded, so watch your bag. Take more care in quiet lanes after dark and on the climb to Nahargarh at night.
Getting around safely
Uber and Ola are cheap and avoid haggling. A car with driver for a day costs about ₹2,000–3,000. Agree auto-rickshaw fares before getting in. The airport is about 30 minutes from the centre.
Solo and women travellers
Many women travel alone in Jaipur, though staring and unwanted attention happen. Dress modestly, use app taxis after dark, decline overly persistent 'guides' and stay in well-reviewed guesthouses or havelis.
Health, water and heat
Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. Choose busy stalls frying to order. Heat is extreme from April to June, and the monsoon brings mosquitoes. Good private hospitals exist; travel insurance is essential.
