Is Ibiza safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Ibiza is generally safe, and most visitors have no problems. The real risks are linked to nightlife: theft, spiked drinks, drugs and late-night road accidents, plus petty theft at beaches and from cars. Away from the party zones, the island is calm.
The real risks
Theft at night and on beaches
Phones and wallets are stolen in clubs, at the West End in Sant Antoni and on beaches. Use a zipped bag and leave valuables in the hotel.
Drink spiking and drugs
Watch your drink, do not accept drinks from strangers and remember that drugs are illegal and dangerous; heat and dehydration make things worse.
Unlicensed taxis
Illegal taxi drivers tout outside clubs and the airport. Use licensed white taxis, which are metered, or official apps.
Road safety
Narrow roads, scooters and late-night drivers. Do not drink and drive, and take care on unlit roads to the coves.
Cliffs and paths
Paths to viewpoints like Torre des Savinar are rocky; wear good shoes and bring a torch after sunset.
Areas and times to take care
Most of the island is very calm. The West End of Sant Antoni and Playa d'en Bossa are where most night-time incidents occur, simply because that is where the crowds and alcohol are. Dalt Vila and Ibiza Town are lively but relaxed in the evening.
Getting around safely
Licensed taxis are white with a green light; queues can be long at peak hours and club closing times. Night buses (the Discobus) link the main club areas and towns in summer. Avoid unlicensed drivers who approach you.
Solo and women travellers
Ibiza is generally fine for solo women. Take the usual nightlife precautions: watch your drink, keep friends informed, use licensed taxis and avoid leaving clubs alone with strangers. Daytime travel around villages and beaches is relaxed.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe but not pleasant to drink; most people buy bottled water. Sun and heat in July and August (about 31-32°C) are strong, so drink plenty of water, especially when dancing. Pharmacies are common; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC.
