Is Helsinki safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Helsinki is one of the safest capitals in Europe, with very low violent crime and reliable public transport at all hours. The realistic risks are occasional pickpocketing, rowdy drunkenness late at night and icy pavements in winter. Most visitors have no problems at all.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Occasional around the central railway station, on crowded trams and at summer events; keep phones and wallets secure.

Icy pavements

From November to March streets can be very slippery; wear shoes with good grip.

Late-night drinking

Weekend nights can be noisy around the station, Kaisaniemi park and some bars; move on if a situation feels tense.

Cold water

The Baltic is cold even in summer; swim from official spots and enter slowly after the sauna.

Cyclists

Bike lanes are busy in summer; look before stepping onto them.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid. The area around the central railway station and Kaisaniemi park can feel rowdy late at night with drinkers, and parts of the eastern suburbs see more incidents, but visitors rarely have reason to go there at night.

Getting around safely

HSL trams, metro, buses and trains are safe, including at night, with night buses at weekends. Taxis are licensed and reliable but expensive; Uber and Bolt also operate.

Solo and women travellers

Helsinki is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply in nightlife areas, such as watching drinks and taking a taxi home late. Public saunas are usually separate for men and women, or mixed with swimwear.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent. Winter cold and short days (about 6 hours of light in December) can be tiring; dress in layers. Healthcare is very good; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC, others travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for police, ambulance and fire.
