Is Helsinki expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Helsinki is expensive by European standards, similar to Stockholm and Copenhagen and cheaper than Oslo or Zurich. A budget traveller needs about €101 a day, mid-range about €200 and comfort about €415 per person. Hotels, dinners and alcohol take most of the money, while public transport is good value.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: even Kallio's budget hotels charge €90–140 a double, and central hotels are €140–240. Dinner in a restaurant easily costs €30–45 per person before drinks, and alcohol is heavily taxed, with strong drinks sold only at the state Alko shops. Museums such as the Ateneum (€22) and Kiasma add up, while transport is cheap with the HSL app and the airport train.
When it is cheaper
Hotels can be cheaper in July, when business travel stops, and in January–March outside events. Midsummer weekend and conference weeks are pricier; overall seasonal differences are moderate.
How to spend less
- Make lunch your main meal: lounas buffets at €12–15 include salad, bread and coffee.
- Take the I/P train from the airport (zone ABC ticket) instead of a taxi.
- Visit Suomenlinna on a normal HSL ticket rather than a sightseeing cruise.
- Buy drinks at supermarkets (beer) or Alko, not in bars.
- Check museum free-entry evenings, which some museums offer on certain days of the month.
- Eat in Kallio, where bars and casual restaurants are cheaper than the centre.
