Is Hamburg safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Hamburg is a safe city for visitors, with low violent crime and good public transport. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowds and on public transport, and drunkenness on the Reeperbahn at weekends. Most visitors have no trouble at all.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Most common at the Hauptbahnhof, in the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, at the Fischmarkt and on the Reeperbahn. Keep bags closed and phones in front pockets.

Reeperbahn nights

Crowded and boisterous on Friday and Saturday nights; ignore aggressive club touts and watch your drink. Weapons are banned in the area at weekends.

Cyclists

Bike lanes run along pavements; step carefully and do not walk in them.

Weather by the water

Storm floods occasionally close the Fischmarkt area in winter; follow local warnings.

Areas and times to take care

The area around the Hauptbahnhof, especially on the Steindamm side of St Georg, has drug-related activity and petty crime; it is busy rather than dangerous but keep alert, especially at night. St Pauli and the Reeperbahn are heavily policed and fine with normal care. The rest of the centre, HafenCity and the Alster are comfortable at any hour.

Getting around safely

HVV trains and buses are safe and run late, with night buses and all-night service on many U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines on Friday and Saturday nights. Taxis are licensed and metered; Uber and FreeNow also work.

Solo and women travellers

Hamburg is comfortable for solo women. Busy areas are well lit and public transport is reliable at night. On the Reeperbahn, usual nightlife precautions apply; note that Herbertstrasse does not admit women.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and good. Weather is changeable and often rainy, so bring layers. EU visitors should carry an EHIC or GHIC card; others need travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 (110 for police)
