Is Hamburg expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Hamburg is one of Germany's pricier cities, a little dearer than Berlin and comparable to Munich, but cheaper than London, Paris or Copenhagen. A budget day is about €100 per person and a mid-range day about €200. Hotels and eating out take most of the money, while public transport and many great views, such as the Elbphilharmonie Plaza and harbour ferries, are cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost, and the city's culture and tourism tax is added per room per night. Prices peak during the Hafengeburtstag in May, big trade fairs and the Christmas market season. Eating out is moderate to expensive, especially in HafenCity and the Alster area. Sights are mixed: Miniatur Wunderland (about €25) and the Kunsthalle (about €16) cost, but the Elbphilharmonie Plaza is free on the day (about €3 to book), the Old Elbe Tunnel is free, and ferry line 62 doubles as a harbour cruise for a normal transport fare.
When it is cheaper
January to March and November (outside trade fairs) usually have the lowest hotel prices, often 20–30% below summer and December weekends.
How to spend less
- Take HVV ferry line 62 from the Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder: a harbour cruise for the price of a transport ticket.
- Visit the Elbphilharmonie Plaza for free by queuing on the day, or pay about €3 for a timed slot.
- Buy an HVV day ticket (9-Uhr-Tageskarte after 9:00 on weekdays) for several trips.
- Consider the Hamburg Card if you will visit several museums and use transport a lot.
- Eat Fischbrötchen at the Landungsbrücken for a cheap lunch.
- Check for trade fair dates before booking; hotel rates can double.
