Is Gyeongju safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Gyeongju is a very safe city, and crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks are traffic when cycling, summer heat and humidity, and slippery trails on Namsan. Walking around at night, including at Wolji Pond and Woljeonggyo, is not a concern for most visitors.

The real risks

Cycling and traffic

Drivers do not always give way to cyclists, and some roads have no cycle lanes. Use paths where possible, ride on the right and use lights after dark.

Summer heat

July and August average highs of about 30°C with high humidity and frequent rain. Visit sites early and drink plenty of water.

Hiking on Namsan

Trails are steep and rocky in places. Wear good shoes, carry water and start early.

Holiday crowds

School trips, cherry-blossom weekends and national holidays bring big crowds at Bulguksa and the tombs. Go early in the morning.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. The tomb parks, Hwangnidan-gil, Gyochon and Bomun Lake are calm and well lit in the evening. Some park paths are dark late at night, so stick to main paths.

Getting around safely

Taxis are metered, safe and start at about ₩4,800; drivers may speak little English, so show the address in Korean. City buses and KTX trains are safe and punctual. Bicycles are the easiest way around the centre.

Solo and women travellers

Gyeongju is very comfortable for solo women, and eating alone is increasingly common in Korea, though some barbecue restaurants require two portions. Normal precautions apply late at night.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink, though many Koreans use filtered water. Protect yourself from heat and sun in summer and dress warmly in winter, when lows drop to about -3°C. Pharmacies and clinics are easy to find.
