Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the biggest share: motels and guesthouses near the bus terminals cost about ₩50,000–80,000, hanok guesthouses near the tombs ₩90,000–200,000, and Bomun Lake resort hotels ₩200,000–400,000. Food is fair, with local meals at ₩10,000–18,000 and barbecue dinners at ₩25,000–40,000. Sights cost very little: Bulguksa, the National Museum and several tomb parks are free, and Wolji Pond is about ₩3,000. The KTX from Seoul (about ₩50,000 each way) is often the largest single cost of the trip.
When it is cheaper
Winter (December to February) and midsummer weekdays usually have the lowest room prices. Cherry-blossom weeks in early April, autumn foliage in late October and November, and Korean holidays such as Chuseok and Seollal are the busiest and dearest.
How to spend less
- Rent a bicycle (about ₩10,000–15,000 a day) to link the central sites instead of taking taxis.
- Visit the free Gyeongju National Museum and Bulguksa, where admission was made free in 2023.
- Use a T-money card on city buses 10, 11 and 12 for Bulguksa and Seokguram.
- Stay near the bus terminals for the cheapest rooms, a short ride from the tombs.
- Eat lunch at simple local restaurants rather than cafés on Hwangnidan-gil.
- Book KTX tickets early for weekends and holidays, or take the cheaper express bus from Seoul.
