Is Grenada safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Grenada is one of the safer, friendlier islands in the Caribbean, with low crime against visitors. The realistic risks are petty theft, driving on steep, narrow roads on the left, and the hurricane season. Most visitors have no problems.
The real risks
Petty theft
Do not leave bags unattended on beaches or valuables visible in rental cars, especially at Grand Anse.
Roads and minibuses
Roads are steep, narrow and winding, and minibus drivers are fast. Ask the driver to slow down if needed and wear seat belts in cars.
Hurricanes
Grenada lies on the southern edge of the hurricane belt; follow forecasts from June to November.
Sea conditions
The west coast is calm, but the Atlantic (east) coast has strong currents. Swim on sheltered beaches.
Hiking
Rainforest trails such as Seven Sisters Falls can be muddy and slippery; go with a guide.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas most visitors need to avoid. As anywhere, quiet beaches and dark streets late at night are where opportunistic theft is most likely, so take a taxi at night rather than walking long distances. St George's is busier on cruise-ship days.
Getting around safely
Taxis are unmetered with posted fares; agree the price before starting. Minibuses are safe and cheap but stop around evening, especially on Sundays. If renting a car, you need a local permit (about EC$60), drive on the left and take care on steep hills.
Solo and women travellers
Women travelling alone generally find Grenada safe and friendly. Comments from men can occur but are usually harmless. Use taxis at night, choose well-reviewed accommodation and dress a little more modestly in towns than on the beach.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally treated, but many visitors drink bottled water to be safe. Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue occur, so use repellent. The sun is strong, and medical care beyond basic clinics may require evacuation, so carry insurance.
