Is Geneva safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Geneva is safe for visitors, with low violent crime. The realistic risk is pickpocketing and bag theft around Cornavin station, the Pâquis and on public transport, plus occasional distraction thefts. Most travellers have no problems at all.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Most common around Cornavin station, the Pâquis and on crowded trams; keep bags closed and phones secure.
Distraction thefts
Be wary of people asking for directions or signatures near the station.
Lake swimming
Swim at supervised baths such as the Bains des Pâquis or Genève-Plage; the Rhône current is strong.
Winter ice
Quays can be icy when the bise wind blows in winter.
Bikes and scooters
Watch for cyclists on shared paths along the lake.
Areas and times to take care
The Pâquis, near the station, is lively and multicultural with many cheap restaurants; it is fine to visit but has some street drug dealing and late-night bars, so stay alert at night. The rest of the centre, the Old Town and the lakefront are calm.
Getting around safely
Trams, buses and boats are safe and punctual. Taxis are expensive; Uber operates. Night buses (Noctambus) run on weekends.
Solo and women travellers
Geneva is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions in bar areas at night are enough, and public transport runs late.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is excellent, and public fountains are drinkable unless marked otherwise. Healthcare is excellent but expensive, so travel insurance is essential.
