Geneva on a budget: how to do it well

Where to sleep for less
The Pâquis has the cheapest rooms, about CHF 130–200 a double, plus hostels and a youth hostel with dorm beds at roughly CHF 40–60. All overnight guests receive the Geneva Transport Card.
Getting around cheaply
Take the free 80-minute airport ticket, then use the free transport card for trams, buses and Mouettes. Walk the centre, which is about 20 minutes across.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Old Town and cathedral tower (about CHF 7)
- Lunch: Migros picnic by the lake (about CHF 10)
- Afternoon: Mouette boat to the Bains des Pâquis (free with the card; bath entry a few francs), Jet d'Eau
- Evening: kebab in the Pâquis or fondue at the buvette (about CHF 15–25)
- Total: about CHF 40–55 plus your bed (about CHF 70), so roughly CHF 110–140
More ways to save
- Fill a bottle at public fountains.
- Eat your main meal at lunch, when plats du jour are cheaper.
- Visit free museums before paid ones.
