Is Gdansk safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Gdańsk is a very safe city, with low levels of crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowded summer streets, overcharging in some nightlife venues and slippery pavements in winter.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Długa Street, Długi Targ and St. Dominic's Fair are crowded in summer; keep bags closed and phones secure.

Nightlife bills

In a few bars and clubs, check prices before ordering and keep an eye on your tab.

Fake amber

Plastic and resin fakes are sold as amber; buy from licensed shops with a certificate.

Winter ice

Pavements and cobbles can be icy from December to February; wear shoes with grip.

Baltic swimming

Swim at beaches with lifeguards in summer and respect the flags; currents can be strong.

Cyclists

Bike lanes are busy; check before stepping onto them.

Areas and times to take care

The Main Town, Granary Island and Sopot are busy and safe into the evening. Take normal care around nightlife on Sopot's Monte Cassino Street on summer weekends and at the main railway station late at night.

Getting around safely

Trams, buses and SKM trains are safe and reliable. Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber, which are widely available and cheap.

Solo and women travellers

Gdańsk is comfortable for solo women, with good public transport and busy streets in the centre. Use apps for late taxis and take normal care in nightlife areas.

Health, water and heat

Tap water in Gdańsk is generally safe, though many people drink bottled water. Summer is mild (about 22–23°C highs), so heat is rarely a problem; winter is cold, with lows near 0°C. Medical care is good; EU visitors should carry an EHIC or GHIC.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 997 police, 999 ambulance.
