Is Gdansk expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Gdańsk is good value compared with Western Europe: a budget day is about 265 zł per person (roughly €60) and a mid-range day about 580 zł. It is a little pricier than smaller Polish cities because of its popularity in summer, with restaurants on Długi Targ and the Motława riverside charging the most.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest cost, especially in July and August and on the riverside, where boutique rooms reach 800–1,500 zł. Food is affordable if you mix milk bars and pierogi places with one restaurant meal a day; terraces on Długi Targ and by the crane cost more. Museums are moderately priced, Malbork is the biggest ticket, and local transport is cheap thanks to SKM trains and trams.
When it is cheaper
October to April is usually cheaper for hotels than summer, often by roughly 20–40%, apart from the Christmas market weeks. Summer weekends and St. Dominic's Fair are the most expensive times.
How to spend less
- Eat lunch at a milk bar (bar mleczny) for a full Polish meal at about 30–50 zł.
- Use SKM trains to reach Sopot and Gdynia instead of taxis.
- Stay a short walk outside the Main Town, or in Wrzeszcz, for lower room rates.
- Buy amber only in licensed shops to avoid paying for plastic or resin fakes.
- Visit museums on their free or reduced days where offered; check each museum's website.
- Take the train to Malbork rather than an organised tour, and buy the castle ticket directly.
