Is Chiang Rai safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Chiang Rai is a safe, relaxed town, and most visitors have no problems. The realistic risks are road accidents (especially on scooters), seasonal smoke haze in March–April, and occasional overcharging. Violent crime against visitors is rare.

The real risks

Scooter accidents

Road accidents are the main risk in Thailand. Wear a helmet, ride only with a valid licence including the motorcycle category, and check that your insurance covers it.

Smoke haze

In March and April crop burning can make air quality poor. Check air-quality apps, and consider a mask if you have breathing problems.

Overcharging

Agree tuk-tuk fares before you ride, or use Grab or Bolt for fixed prices.

Heat and sun

Highs are about 29–33°C much of the year. Carry water and visit temples early.

Border areas

The Golden Triangle area is normally fine for day trips, but follow official advice on border areas with Myanmar.

Areas and times to take care

The town centre, the Night Bazaar and the walking streets are fine to walk in the evening. Check official travel advice for the latest guidance on areas near the Myanmar border.

Getting around safely

Grab and Bolt are reliable and fixed-price. Tuk-tuks are available; agree the fare first. Buses to Chiang Mai are safe and frequent. Avoid riding scooters at night on mountain roads.

Solo and women travellers

Chiang Rai is generally comfortable for solo women, and many solo travellers visit. Usual precautions apply: watch your drink, use Grab at night and dress modestly at temples.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; bottled and filtered water is cheap. Protect against mosquitoes, especially in the rainy season, as dengue occurs in Thailand. Check air quality in March–April. Private hospitals in town provide good care; have travel insurance.

Emergency: 191 for police, 1669 for ambulance, 199 for fire, and 1155 for the Tourist Police (English-speaking).
