Is Chiang Rai expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No — Chiang Rai is cheap even by Thai standards, cheaper than Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai's busiest areas. Expect about ฿950 a day per person on a tight budget, about ฿2,250 mid-range and ฿5,900 or more for comfort. The main extra cost is transport to the temples and mountains, which are spread out around town.

Where the money goes
Rooms are cheap: guesthouses near the Clock Tower cost about ฿500–900 a night, central hotels ฿1,000–2,000, riverside hotels with pools ฿1,200–2,500 and resorts ฿3,500 or more. Food is very cheap at markets and food courts, with most dishes ฿50–120. The main variable is transport: the White Temple, Baan Dam, Doi Tung and the Golden Triangle are spread out, so you pay for Grab rides, a scooter or a car with driver (about ฿1,800–2,500 a day, which can be shared). Temple tickets are low.
When it is cheaper
The rainy season (May–October) usually brings lower room rates and fewer visitors. The cool season from November to February is the busiest and most expensive, especially around the New Year.
How to spend less
- Eat at the Night Bazaar food court and the weekend walking-street markets.
- Share a car with driver for the Doi Tung and Golden Triangle day; split four ways it is cheap.
- Take the local bus from the old bus station to the White Temple instead of a taxi.
- Visit the Blue Temple, which is free, and the town temples, which are free or by donation.
- Come by bus from Chiang Mai rather than flying via Bangkok.
- Stay in guesthouses near the Clock Tower and walk to the markets.
