Is Chiang Mai safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Chiang Mai is a calm and safe city for visitors, with little violent crime. The realistic issues are commission-driven tuk-tuk and tour touts, traffic for scooter riders, and seasonal smoke from crop burning, which can make the air unhealthy from about February to April.

The real risks

Air pollution

From about February to April, smoke from crop burning can give some of the worst air quality in Asia for weeks; check air-quality apps and bring masks, or avoid the season if you have breathing problems.

Scooter accidents

Traffic and mountain roads (including the 762 bends to Pai) are risky for inexperienced riders; wear a helmet and make sure your licence and insurance cover you.

Commission touts

Drivers offering cheap rides that end at jewellery shops, restaurants or 'cooking schools'; agree destination and fare first or use Grab.

Unethical elephant camps

Avoid any camp offering riding, painting or shows; choose a no-riding sanctuary.

Prices without menus

Some Night Bazaar and riverside places charge high prices for seafood or drinks; ask the price first.

Areas and times to take care

The Old City, Nimman and the riverside are fine day and night. Bars around the Night Bazaar and the Old City's backpacker strips get lively late; use normal care with drinks and late-night rides.

Getting around safely

Grab is reliable and fixed-price. Red songthaews are shared and cheap, about 30–50 baht in the city, but agree the price first. For Doi Inthanon or Chiang Rai, hire a driver or join a reputable tour.

Solo and women travellers

Chiang Mai is one of the easiest places in Thailand for women travelling alone. Dress modestly at temples, and note that women should not touch monks or hand things to them directly. Use Grab late at night.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; bottled and refill stations are everywhere. Heat peaks in March–May at about 33–34°C, the smoky season affects breathing, and the rainy season brings mosquitoes, so use repellent. It can be near freezing at the Doi Inthanon summit in December and January.

Emergency: 191 for police, 1669 for medical emergencies, 1155 for the Tourist Police.
