Is Chiang Mai expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Short answer

Chiang Mai is cheap by any Western standard and usually cheaper than Bangkok or the southern islands for rooms and food. A budget traveller needs about 1,150 baht (roughly €30) a day, mid-range about 3,400 baht and comfort about 9,500 baht per person. Paid activities such as elephant sanctuaries and cooking classes are the big costs; street food is very cheap.

Where the money goes

Day trips and activities take the biggest share: an elephant sanctuary at 2,000–2,800 baht, a cooking class at 1,000–1,500 baht, a driver for Doi Inthanon and the 300-baht national park fee. Rooms are good value, from 500–1,000 baht in Old City guesthouses to 5,000–15,000 baht at riverside or Mae Rim resorts. Food is the cheapest part of the trip if you eat at markets and curry-and-rice shops.

When it is cheaper

The rainy season (May to October) brings lower room prices, often noticeably below the November–February peak. The Yi Peng festival in November is the most expensive time for rooms.
