Is Chengdu safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Chengdu is a very safe city for visitors, with low rates of violent and street crime and heavy surveillance in public places. The realistic issues are traffic (especially silent electric scooters), occasional overcharging and the very spicy food. Walking at night in busy central areas is generally fine.

The real risks

Traffic and e-scooters

Electric scooters ride silently on pavements and through red lights. Look both ways even on footpaths and at green crossings.

Tea house and 'student' scams

As in other Chinese cities, friendly strangers may invite you to a tea ceremony or bar and present a huge bill. Decline politely.

Pickpocketing

Uncommon, but possible in crowds on Chunxi Road, Kuanzhai Alley and on packed metro lines at rush hour. Keep your phone secure, as it is also your wallet.

Holiday crowds

During Golden Week and the Spring Festival, sights such as Leshan can have crushing crowds and closed sections. Avoid those periods or go very early.

Local laws

China has strict laws on drugs, political activity and photography of security sites. Carry your passport, which is needed for trains, hotels and some sights.

Areas and times to take care

Central districts such as Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, the Wenshu Monastery area, Kuanzhai Xiangzi and Jiuyanqiao bar street are busy and safe into the late evening. The main reason to take more care is crowding at night markets and bar areas, where pickpockets and overcharging are more likely, rather than any real danger.

Getting around safely

The metro is clean, safe and has English signs; it runs until about 23:00. Didi, the ride-hailing app, works in English and is the easiest option at night. Official taxis are metered; avoid unlicensed drivers at the stations and airports. Allow 45–60 minutes on metro line 18 to Tianfu airport.

Solo and women travellers

Chengdu is generally very comfortable for solo women, and it is common for women to go out alone in the evening. Harassment is rare. Normal precautions apply in bar districts late at night, and using Didi with trip-sharing is a good way to get home.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water unboiled; use bottled water or the hot water provided in hotels. The food can be extremely spicy and oily, so start mild ('wei la'). Summers are hot and humid (about 30–31°C highs and frequent rain), and air quality can be poor on some winter days, so check the AQI if you are sensitive.

Emergency: 110 police, 120 ambulance, 119 fire.
